WHAT SHOULD A RESUME LOOK LIKE

Guideline

  • WHAT'S IN A RESUME

A good resume will have more than just great job experience, a good resume should:

    • Be organized and have a clear, flowing structure.
    • Be optimized to make it through any ATS, meaning one column, docx format, with no cliparts or fancy design.
    • Have relevant information for the job posting. Meaning you should only include duties and tasks you performed at your previous jobs if they're pertinent to the job you're applying to.
    • Be tailored to each job posting to fit the job description, qualifications, and skills they're looking for.
    • Include keywords and phrases from the job posting.

WHAT SHOULD A COVER LETTER LOOK LIKE

Guideline

Woman Writing at her Desk
  • WHAT'S IN A COVER LETTER

A cover letter is not just a "why I want this job" letter, it's more like a "why I'm qualified for this job" letter. In a cover letter, you want to:

    • Research the company beforehand and include a statement about why you're a good fit.
      • This could mean reading through their mission statement and talking about why it speaks to you.
      • It adds a much more personal element and you want the hiring manager to think "oh, they want this job!" not "oh, they want any job".
    • Talk about how you're a good fit for their team.
      • Remember, everyone likes someone who's both a team-player and a self-starter, regardless of how contradictory that sounds.
    • Qualify your experiences and skills by describing situations or stories that highlight aspects of your experiences and skills.
      • Don't just list what you did and what you think you learned, qualify your statements!

  • WHY TAILOR YOUR RESUME

When you have just 1 generalized resume for every job application, you're missing keywords and qualifiers that you shouldn't be missing if you were to tailor each resume for every job application. Keep in mind:

    • According to Careerbuilder, 54% of job seekers (out of a sample of 3244) don't tailor their resume to the job posting. Want to stand out? Don't rely on aesthetics or graphics that won't even make it past the ATS, tailor your resume.
    • Keeping a general resume template and tailoring it for each job application is a far more efficient method than mass-applying with one resume. You'll see greater returns by tailoring your resume.
    • We make sure to tailor your resume and/or cover letter to give you the best chance at an interview.
